Re: Let's make an rpg together
There is much more planning to be done! Story and characters, and then spriting and graphics. It would be great if I made the sprites for the hobo, but he should have an official design, I don't know what he looks like!
Here's some things to discuss
What is the city or locations name that the hobo lives in?
What is the hobos name?
What does he look like?
What's his personality like?
How does Sasquatch come into the story?
Remember people, feel free to come up with ideas as freely as you want

Re: Let's make an rpg together
1. We could start somewhere in Oregon.
2. You should be able to decide the hobo's name when you start out.
3. A hobo
4. You should be able to decide that as well since you're the on playing him.
5. At some point you go to Washington.
Also, you said I could make up the Velociraptor stuff right? So...
Name: Mara
Appearance: green eyes, coloration other than that should be like a tiger, orangeish with brownish stripes
Personality: She's very creative and likes to make stuff out of anything lying around, also very curious and allways wants to go exploring. She HATES fishing. Example. And loves waffles
I might add more later, but I'm too lazy right now

Re: Let's make an rpg together
Alright, I think we could make progress if I open "polls" for everybody to vote on which ideas they like. It would go like this: First poll, what personality traits does Hobo have? Is he sarcastic? Does he make lame jokes? Is he a sympathy character and bad things all-ways happen to him in comical ways? Is he a silent protagonist and never speaks?
Ok so when we have enough of these I will open a poll, and see what people want, and then make the highest voted traits official, and then we move on to the next poll. Sound like a good idea?
I just need a few more things to add to the poll to make it bigger. So please just throw some ideas in on what the hobo could be like.
I'll start the list off with those examples I mentioned earlier.
The hobo could be...
Extremely sarcastic
Makes lame jokes and puns
Is a sympothy character, generally a butt monkey and bad things happen to him in funny ways
Is a silent protagonist and doesn't talk
any other things we should add it?
lol I just remembered there is barely any people here so it would be nice if everyone will vote, once I open the poll.

I say these two put together I'm also pretty sure that I'm the only other person that is on here very often
It could be that I have no life... nah...

Re: Let's make an rpg together
Yeah I'm trying to find ways to get people more involved. It's hard finding the right balance when making things more interesting or else it gets to complicated. I dunno if I'll stick with the poll thing, I guess we'll see how it turns out.
So for now, I'm asking for more things to put in the poll, different from whats already there. And then when we get a few more I'll open the poll officially.

From Amanda: "the hobo should live in Boring, Oregon. Then he should travel to washington to look for Sasquatch, and on the way home they steal the waffles and get into this big broo-haha. (<--- new favorite word right there!) and I like kyle's suggestion for personality, combining the two."

Any comments on his design?

What's his motivation for finding sasquatch? Maybe it would be better if he stumbled upon Bigfoot accidentally, it would be a better surprize if you weren't expecting sasquatch to be in the game in the first place.
Then he should travel to washington to look for Sasquatch

Re: Let's make an rpg together
I guess there is no longer a reason for him to go to Washington right now.
Anyway, programing has begun! This opens up a lot of things to do, the next step is adding skills and items and weapons into the game. Skills are attacks that can be used in battle. Here's an example:
Skill: Push
attainable at level 1
an attack that has a chance of knocking enemies on the ground
or
Skill: Bad Breath
get at level 15
Makes enemies sick, they might sometimes throw up
feel free to come up with more ideas. However, we still need to focus on the story. Let's focus on the beginning, leading into when we meet sasquatch, and the adventure they go on together.

Re: Let's make an rpg together
Push should upgrade to shove, which has a greater chance at knocking over your foe and does more damage.
Anyway, for story,
Part one: The hobo starts out in Boring Oregon. Then, he takes a train to Treeville Washington (or you could call the town something else idk), either in search of bigfoot or for some other reason. After he finds Sasquatch, they go wandering in the woods where they find a large, nay, HUGE plate of waffles and a big device of some kind (the thing for time travel) and being hungry, and seeing no one nearby, they decide to help themselves. Later, having eaten most of the waffles, they pack up the rest and are just starting to doze off when the LARPer comes back to eat his waffles. Then, seeing that his waffles had been eaten, the LARPer yells, "Lightning bolt!" and activates the time machine, sending the hobo and sasquatch back to the time of the dinosaurs.
End of part one.
And the end of story that I've thought up for now. What do you think?

Re: Let's make an rpg together
EDIT: It's been a month since we started. It has progressed at a slowly but surely pace. But things are already speeding up dramatically. I look forward to seeing your teamwork!
Just popping in to try to keep everyone up to date, as there has been discussions going on in the chat-box you might have missed out on. We've been discussing parts of the story and also discussing what needs to be done. And right now, we need the first part of the story more fleshed out (better than Artakha's last post). I want to give someone a chance to wright out this part.
Alright, here is a short outline of the different parts of the story and what needs to be done with them
ACT 1
setting: the present
----part 1 ~ a prologue
-------Introduction of hobo
-------He needs a motivation, which may or may not be the reason he ends up in washington
-------He runs into sasquatch
----part 2 ~ sasquatch and hobo go on an adventure together
-------it might involve them stopping a plot by the mad scientist.
-------if not, the mad scientist (MS for short, until we find a placeholder name) should be involved somehow. because
--------this part of the story introduces the Larper, and how he got the time device. This can be done by first introducing the scientist.
--------at least part of it should take place in the main town or city. (there needs to be a city/town, but it can be in either part 1 or part 2, it doesn't matter)
--------will end with hobo and sasquatch being sent back in time
ACT 2
setting: Dino era (the past)
----part 1 ~ adventure in the past
------they go on an adventure with getting back to the future as their goal
----part 2 ~ back to the future
-------they need to fix time
setting: alternate present, ruled by dinos
BLA BLA BLA MORE STUFF HAPPENS
I'll add on to it later. I just wanted to show the necessary aspects of the beginning. So here is what somebody needs to do:
ignore everything else, and just focus on writing a story that introduces the hobo and the start of his journey. Be as creative as you can be, because the only reservation is that this part ends with him meeting sasquatch in washington. However, try to keep it focused on serving it's purpose as the beginning of the story, it doesn't need to go off on a silly tangent.
So, I'm leaving this open to anyone who wants to volunteer, or if anyone wants to just contribute a little then please discuss your ideas.
**dang i hate long posts. They are so exhausting to write that when your'e finished you don't have the energy to proof-read the whole thing. I hope it makes sense 'cause I'm not going back to check it.

I'll do it! Just give me a day or two, and I'll have something for u to review. This creating and drawing and html stuff may go over my head, but the "writing a story" is right up my alley.

Hobo Shtory!! :D
All right. Before you read any farther, please bear in mind: this IS a rough draft. I took what SineNomine requested, did some research on WA forests and on Bigfoot (there have been several documented "sightings" in the area I chose), and chose a place in WA not so far from Boring, so that it's believable for a hobo to get there. Other than that, I just got creative. PLEASE give me constructive advice, I will change anything. But do not criticize or pick on anything! I did my best!
Here you go:
Boring. That's where he lives. Not so fitting of a name, since being a hobo there is
never boring. Why, just yesterday he had the most interesting hour spent
Dumpster-diving. He'd found seven old shoes, some apple cores with quite a bit of
apple left on them, and too many Chines takeout boxes to count (he had, however,
counted the dirty diapers. Why, he didn't know. But there were 27.)
However, sitting here on the park bench, in the bitingly cold wind, he realized that
he wanted a change of scene. And, incidentally, he was craving waffles. After the
nice lady came out of the bakery and gave him some old bread (like she did every
Tuesday), he wandered down Main Street.
Where could he go, being a hobo of little means and almost too much charm to
stand? He'd always wanted to see the Grand Canyon, but obviously that was a
hopeless dream. Maybe he could make it to Vancouver, Canada? Not likely they'd
let him over the border with no passport. Just then, the wind picked up and blew a
yellow flyer into his face. He peeled it off his forehead and read it:
GIFFORD PINCHOT NATIONAL FOREST
"The Gifford Pinchot National Forest, located near Skamania, WA,
is one of the oldest National Forests in the United States. Whether you
seek solitude, creative inspiration, wildlife, or scenic beauty, you can find it
here. It is also an attraction for Big Foot hunters, who believe that the most
heavily wooded areas are home to the mythical giant."
Now this was perfect! He immediately went to the Public Information booth in the
park, and looked at the big map on the wall. Gifford Pinchot National Forest was
only 64 miles away, give or take. He wondered if he could walk it... He supposed he
could hitchhike, but, smelling himself, decided only a skunk with a clothespin on its
nose would pick him up (not that he'd ever seen one, and driving no less). So
hitchhiking was vetoed; that meant walking.
He'd never been to a forest, but he imagined it was beautiful, and the picture on
the back of the flyer confirmed it. He could hike on the paths, sleep out under the
trees, and live the camper's life he'd always dreamed of. Maybe he'd even see Big
Foot (whom he'd always preferred to call Sasquatch. He remembered the night he'd
snuck into the theater to watch the movie The Sasquatch Gang). What an
adventure that would be!
The hobo couldn't wait, and since he had nothing to pack, decided to leave right
away. He eagerly set off down the highway, whistling to himself a tune that sounded
vaguely like "We're Off To See The Wizard".

Re: Let's make an rpg together
Sorry I've been absent for a while! I've been off having fun and I hope it doesn't appear that I'm losing any interest. I am still very much motivated to make progress and finish this project. However, some friends are coming down this weekend so I might waste more time partying. But until then, I've got a few days to get as much done as possible.
So first off, thanks for the chunk of story, MP. It will pretty much work as it is, although we can drop a couple things like the waffles. Sorry but the waffles have never been funny so far. There might be some way to incorporate it, but there is a certain integrity I want to maintain about the games well crafted humor. <<== (not sarcasm*).
So I will be around to discuss the game, and I will be more involved in the next part of the story.
*no, really

Re: Let's make an rpg together
I suppose I should clarify some things, by the way. First, what is written and posted is just a basis for the opening of the game, the intro video or whatever. (I could never help myself from adding detail; I should probably curb that in the future.) Second, I'm fine with dropping the waffles... I was never crazy 'bout that anywho. Third... take as much party time as you want! (Actually, I may be up there this weekend too, with Allicopter. Haha.) What with all the crazy stuff in my life, it's a miracle I managed to write what I did, and it'll take awhile for me to write more.
So, is it right that I should write more in a movie-script-type format? If so, that's a fun one for me to write in, I don't always get to use that style. I need a little more direction as to what comes next... shall I try to write a basic script for the first level?
And you're welcome. This is fun!
